Sarajevo. Crossroads of Empires
Ottomans, Habsburgs, and the spark of 1914
You can walk the quest in one language and keep the interface in another.
Sarajevo was an Ottoman frontier town, then a Habsburg administrative centre, then a Yugoslav city, then a besieged capital, and now the heart of Bosnia and Herzegovina. All these layers are visible within a single mile of walking through the historical centre. The route reads the city's three foundations: the Ottoman bazaar of Baščaršija, the Habsburg city hall (Vijećnica), and the Latin Bridge, where on 28 June 1914 the assassination of Franz Ferdinand triggered the First World War.
